Voice Of Slum

Project Laado

Menstruation continues to be a pressing issue, especially in terms of women's empowerment, which remains an aspiration.

In rural India, access to sanitary napkins is considered a luxury for young girls and women. Even on regular days, adolescent girls may hesitate to purchase sanitary napkins. Unfortunately, during the Covid-19 pandemic, menstrual hygiene has been sidelined, exacerbating their situation.

In India, only about 36% of the 336 million menstruating women use sanitary napkins, and this number has declined rapidly due to the Covid-19 crisis. It’s time to take action to dispel myths and stigma surrounding menstruation.

Laado is an initiative aimed at promoting awareness and fostering a safe and hygienic lifestyle among young girls and women. Our goal with Laado is to break the silence and address menstrual challenges prevalent in slum areas of India.

Menstruation is not a choice, yet those affected by period poverty often have to choose between purchasing period products and other essential items. We believe they shouldn’t have to make such choices. Therefore, we aim to distribute period products to ensure women and girls have access to them.

Our objective is to distribute 500,000 sanitary napkins by the end of 2025 and raise awareness to provide them with a life of dignity and respect.

Let’s break the taboo surrounding menstruation while ensuring sanitary products reach those who need them the most.
